Top Web Directories list

Major directories
- DMOZ Whatever critical comments can be made about DMOZ, it is still the King of Directories. The content is the most widely syndicated directory content on the internet, and Google has even started using DMOZ descriptions for some websites. Do remember you can have multiple listings, not least in a main category, but also local listings. Also remember you can have deep content linked to, but DMOZ much prefers to do this for non-commercial reference material, rather than obviously commercial pages.
- Wow Directory The Wow Directory is probably the only directory that can even begin to follow DMOZ in terms of size, scale, and ambition. What's more, paid listings remain cheaper than most rival paid directories, and if you submit to a local category, you will also have links generated for the wider categories above it. Widely recommended.
- Bcentral (Microsoft) Business Directory The Microsoft small business directory is overcrowded, but it offers multiple links in multiple categores for a single listing. Definitely one to consider, not least because of the leverage of the company behind this directory.
- SevenSeek John Scott knows how to build a powerful site, and SevenSeek is no exception. This is a domain built for a long-term audience, and I would definitely say this is a site worth considering investing in for a listing.
- Uncover the Web Shawn Steele's directory is fast turning into something bigger - attempting to learn the mistakes of Bluefind and others, it is very focussed on providing a useful reference point and content-rich site. The site listings are not cheap, but in the current environment are definitely worth considering.
- JoeAnt JoaAnt is simply one of those directories that has been around almost as long as the internet. A solid and reliable place to seek a listing. Although you can have a free listing as an editor, you may find it's simply and quicker simply to pay.
- Gimpsy This is another of those perennial directories, that offers a solid presence for some time to come. The submissions interface can be a little confusing at first, but is worth persevering with.
- 192 Directory The 192 directory has a very strong presence on search in general, and is a place that offers improved visibility. A solid directory worth submitting to.
- Biz Directory Javier García Esteban has built a network of sites based on his excellent directory scripts. While this means he sometimes plays dangerously with webmaster guidlines, he has ensured a name for himself in the directory market in general. Good support with his scripts, too.
Minor directories to submit to
The following directories may be smaller, but they also offers various advantages when looking for multiple submissions, not least on price. All of the directories below are deemed to be long-term projects, so I personally expect them to be good long-term investments:
- Bigall A small but steady directory, with a couple of nice little touches, such as suggested alternative listings in the same category. Very reasonable fee, too.
- Best of the Web Another respectable directory, that attempts to imitate something of DMOZ in the presentation of listings. A little expensive for a minor directory, but worth considering.
- Linkopedia Another small but clean directory, it has good presentation, a good number of listings, and doesn't let advertising get in the way of the fact that it is primarily a directory.
- Massive links Massivelinks is one of the smaller directories, but the presentation is simple and focussed, with unique pages for all listings with Alexa screenshot. Worth considering for the long term as it establishes itself better.
- Web World Index This is another small and cleanly presented directory that has been around for while, yet remains focussed on being a directory.
- Platinax Directory Another smaller directory, which forms part of a content-driven site focussed on business development. It specifically allows multiple submission of the same/site page in multiple categories, which could be very useful if you have the budget for it.
- Site Sift Another small directory with a larger price, but there's been thought behind the development of this one, and could well be worth considering for long-term listings of sites.
- Go Guides An otherwise large and respectable directory, it tends to lose something by providing first emphasis on sitewide links than listings. However, if you have the budget for it, worth considering.
- Limey Search A useful place to submit UK sites, as information on the database is shared across the Abrexa directories.
- Skaffe This is effectively a smaller clone of GoGuides and the same comments apply, but is well established as a directory and also worth considering submitting to.
- All the Bizz This isn't a well-presented site in Firefox, but it otherwise is a small directory with large ambitions, and offers potential for a modest price.
